Deinotherium tusk

Very nice tusk of a rare proboscidean. This is a lower jaw tusk of a Deinotherium giganteum, a huge elephant-like of five metres high, which went extinct during the Pleistocene. Deinotherium had two tusks in the lower jaw that pointed down. Deinotherium tusks are very specific, they are the only proboscidean tusks having a chitine, nail like layer on part of the tusks. This is very well visible on this tusk
